A Record Cafe, Awana Genting Highlands

If you’re looking for somewhere to have breakfast in Awana or Genting Highlands, check out A Record Cafe which is located along the same row of shops as Geo Resort & Hotel Genting Highlands. We were looking for somewhere that did a Western-style breakfast near our Air BnB (to avoid the crowds at the top of Genting, especially during COVID-19) and A Record Cafe seemed to be the only place in Awana that fit the bill.

A Record Cafe, conveniently located next to Geo Hotel & Resort Genting Highlands (lots of parking underground)

The menu has a record player at the front, but the theme of the cafe is a little more on the family side with colourful balloons painted on one wall, which is a contrast to the menu and the name of the cafe. People looking for an instagrammable cafe in Genting may be disappointed. The crowd on a Sunday morning was a mixture of tourists, passing bikers and some regular customers.

If you’re looking for a Western meal in Awana or Genting, A Record Cafe has plenty of choice
Their Fry/Grill menu seemed popular online
Hopefully they’ll have the Classic Waffle next time

The menu has quite a lot, but sadly that day they didn’t have the Classic Waffle with Scrambled Eggs & Ham (the waffle iron was broken), so we ordered the Signature Big Breakfast and the Scrambled Egg French Toast, plus hot Ying-Yong (coffee & tea). The french toast took around 20 minutes to arrive, but the Big Breakfast took nearly 50 minutes, with other tables receiving their orders first (mostly local food like noodles) – not sure if the kitchen was understaffed or they forgot our order. The staff were apologetic, though we wished the food could have come faster.

A Record Cafe’s Scrambled Egg French Toast
The Signature Big Breakfast took a long time, but it was tasty. The ham would have been tastier if it had been real ham or less chewy.

The Scrambled Egg French Toast (RM9.90) sees three layers of french toast topped with scrambled egg and mayonnaise – no complaints with the flavour. The Signature Big Breakfast (RM23.90) had some delicious mushrooms cooked with onions in a buttery sauce, baked beans, scrambled egg, two pieces of white toast, turkey ham, a sausage and a small salad. While it doesn’t look #aesthetic like cafes in KL, it tasted fine and was great during the rainy weather we experienced.

For KL-ites looking for a weekend brunch spot or a weekend getaway that’s close to both KL and Genting, A Record Cafe should be on your list.
