Review of CuBs & CuPs dog cafe, Desa Sri Hartamas

Kuala Lumpur doesn’t have that many dog-friendly cafes but Cub & Cups in Desa Sri Hartamas is certainly a hit for dog lovers. A lot of people brought their own dogs to run around and just chill.

Packed over the weekend, at 7pm on a Wednesday night it was maybe 70% full. There are two or three tables outside but the majority are inside.

While Alaskan Malamute Mocha was resting at home, cutie-patootie husky Cola and Pomeranian Nacho owned the Korean-owned and run cafe (they belong to the owners).

There’s an extensive menu with all-day breakfasts, coffee, tea, pasta, pizza, salad, sandwiches and shaved ice/pat bing su.

A Cubs & Cups breakfast (basically a big breakfast) is rm32 – breakfast prices range from Rm12 – Rm32 .

Cheapest coffee is an expresso at rm8 and the most expensive runs at rm13 (cafe mocha or caramel cappucino).

RM23 for an avocado and cheese sandwich

We ordered avocado and cheese sandwiches (RM23) as well as a pepperoni bacon pizza (RM27). While the sandwiches seemed overpriced in regards to the size and small salad, the pizza was worth it. The sandwiches were tasty though-nice and cheesy-so if the portion was bigger I’d definitely order it again.

Cubs and Cups have a beer promotion where you can get 3 pints for rm80.

It’s self service so you order and collect your food from the counter (they did deliver some of it though) as well as collecting your utensils.

As we were all still hungry after our mains, we decided to try the strawberry and blueberry milk shaved ice/pat bing su. At rm32 it was the most expensive on the list (plain milk ice is rm23) and we had a bet on whether it’d be fresh fruit or just syrup.

Luckily it was fresh fruit but I wish there was more. Cafe Bene and Villa Ju (2 other Korean owned cafés) give bigger portions in terms of bing su.
Flavour wise it is milky but not overpowering, and while a little tart the fruits were refreshing. Not a fan of chopped nuts but my friends liked them.

Cola was wandering around, sniffing under the table or just lazing around for most of the evening until another customer brought her dog. Then there was a lot of barking as well as play-fighting.

The staff are welcoming and have prepared an area for cleaning your hands after playing with the dogs, as well as a litter box. However patrons must note you cannot FEED the dogs (it’s written on the wall).

All in all a relaxing evening full of canine companionship. While I’m holding out hope a dog cafe like the ones in Japan and Korea (such as the one featured in SHINee’s 2008 TV show Yunhanam) this cafe will certainly keep me, and many other dog-lovers happy.
